Love to Talk, Hate to Pay? Save Money on Phone Bills!
It hasn’t been very long ago that families lived within a few miles of each other. But those times have past, and we’re now spread out all over the nation! Take me, for instance. I have sisters in California and Illinois, parents that live halfway across the state, one nephew in college in Washington, D.C. and one nephew in college in Egypt! I love them and want to stay in touch with them, but the phone bills can make that cost prohibitive…unless you have a few tricks up your sleeve, like I do.
1. Study your options and pick the plan that best meets your calling needs.
You have literally dozens of choices when it comes to picking the phone plan that’s right for you. Perhaps a package deal through your cable company is the right choice for you, or maybe you want to select a low cost calling plan that allows you to make unlimited calls after a certain time in the evening. Do your research and pick the calling plan that best fits your needs and lifestyle. Remember that you don’t need to stay with one plan for life. Calling plans are business arrangements, not marriages. If you select one plan and then find a better offer, you’re free to switch.
2. Consider enrolling your loved ones in a buddy program.
Several cell phone companies have programs that allow you to pick a certain number of “buddies.” Calls to your buddies are either low cost or free. If you can talk your loved ones into joining the plan with you, you’ll be able to talk to your heart’s delight for very little cash.
And when you’re talking about saving money on the phone, don’t forget to use that cell phone. Most plans give you a certain number of “free” minutes. You have to pay the price of the plan whether or not you use the minutes, so you might as well use them to catch up with your family and friends around the country.
3. On the road a lot? Don’t forget about phone cards.
Making phone calls from hotel rooms can be brutally expensive, so look for good deals on calling cards. Don’t forget that most phone cards have an expiration date. Make sure you use the card before the cut-off date or all the minutes you’ve purchased will be wasted…not remotely frugal.
4. Use your computer to stay in touch.
