Save Gas, Save Money

Temperatures are soaring again, and with them, gas prices. It makes sense that the fewer times you have to fill up on gas, the more money you’ll save on gas. These suggestions will help you reduce the amount of time you spend at the tank.

1. Keep your car in good working order. Change the oil ever three months or three thousand miles, make sure the tire pressure is correct, and change the air filter and fuel filter when a trusted mechanic advises you to do so. Yes, you may spend a little more initially to get your car in shape, but in the long run, you’ll save.

2. Clean out your car. The fifty pounds of junk in the trunk that you’ve been meaning to donate to Goodwill for a year are costing you. So are the thirty pound bags of kitty litter you’ve been hauling around since your lap trip to the grocery store. The more weight your car has to carry, the more gas it will drink. (And if that isn’t an incentive for going on that diet your doctor’s been preaching to you about, I don’t know what is!)

3. Keep a shopping list. This will eliminate trips to the grocery store do to forgotten items. If you know you will eventually use a lot of a product, and the product won’t spoil, consider buying in bulk to save yourself future trips. With a little planning, and perhaps a couple of stops at a nearby convenience store for necessities like milk, you may be able to cut your major grocery shopping trips to every week or so.

4. Try to run all your errands at once. Plan a route that involves the least amount of driving and try to get everything done in one day or evening. You’ll feel better having those pesky chores out of the way, and you’ll ultimately save gas, money, and time.

5. Consider walking or alternate transportation. Some jobs require having your own transportation, but if yours doesn’t, consider walking, bicycling, taking the bus, or carpooling to work. Not only can walking, bicycling, roller skating, etc. save you money, but they are also excellent forms of exercise.

Rising gas prices have put the pinch on many families this summer, but you don’t need to play the oil companies’ reindeer games. Take control of your gas consumption and save money on gas by following these five simple tips.
